As a freelance wedding officiant, I love designing the ceremony together with you and turning every little wish into reality. One of the loveliest ways to make your wedding even more personal and touching is to involve guests with spoken contributions. After all, who knows you better than your closest family members and friends? But how does it actually work? Who should speak? About what? And for how long? This article should give you a few ideas and some food for thought. As your wedding officiant, I'm of course also happy to take care of the details — arranging and coordinating your loved ones' contributions.
Why contributions from guests enrich the bespoke wedding ceremony
Imagine you're sitting there, beaming with happiness, and suddenly your best friend, your brother, or even your grandmother stands up to say a few words. These moments are simply priceless and add a deeply personal touch to the ceremony. The stories your guests share, the memories they evoke, and the emotions they express create a connection that goes far beyond what words alone can convey. These are the kind of goosebump moments that stay with you forever.
Who should give a speech?
Choosing who gives a speech is a very personal decision. Perhaps someone in your circle of friends and family has accompanied you closely on your journey as a couple. Or perhaps you simply choose the people who are especially close to your heart — and to whom you are especially close.
Of course, it's also possible to involve several guests — how about a "best of" from your closest friends, for example? Everyone tells a short anecdote, talks about a quality they particularly appreciate about you, or offers a wish for your future. But be careful: less is often more. Two to three speakers is ideal, so as not to overload the ceremony while still having a varied set of contributions.
Topics and length of the contributions
As for topics, everything that's said should come from the heart. Personal memories, good advice for marriage, or humorous stories from your shared past are all perfect. What matters is that the speeches are positive and appreciative. Nobody wants to be reminded of an embarrassing mishap on their wedding day — save that for the stag or hen party. It also helps if contributions from multiple speakers fit together, or even build on each other. Ideally, appoint a "head of speeches" 😉 to coordinate everyone. As your wedding officiant, I'm of course also happy to help make sure everything is harmoniously aligned.
The length of the contributions should also stay within reason. All the speeches together shouldn't exceed 5 minutes. That's long enough to tell a nice story or convey an emotional message, but short enough to hold your guests' attention and keep the ceremony on schedule.
How best to integrate spoken contributions into the bespoke wedding ceremony
Spoken contributions can be woven seamlessly into the ceremony. Depending on the content, I determine the ideal moment for each contribution within your ceremony. This creates a harmonious flow, and the speeches feel like small highlights that make your bespoke wedding ceremony even more emotional and varied.
I naturally coordinate the timing with the speakers in advance, and make sure everyone has a microphone in hand at exactly the right moment. 🙂
One final tip
If you want to play it safe, here's a small insider tip: don't forget to have a few tissues ready! 😉 Because when your favourite uncle suddenly starts talking, there's rarely a dry eye left in the room — whether from laughter or emotion!
I would be absolutely delighted to create a wonderful, emotional ceremony with you and your guests soon — one that suits you completely.
PS: Of course, we can also integrate spoken contributions from guests into the renewal of your vows or your children's welcome ceremony!
