When couples ask me where in Cyprus they should get married, my heart usually beats for one region: Paphos. This is where I live, on the island's west coast – and where I see again and again how naturally a landscape can become the setting for a wedding ceremony.
Why Paphos is so special for a wedding ceremony
- Sunsets over the sea. The west coast faces the open sea, so the sun sets right over the water. A ceremony at golden hour is bathed in a light no one could ever stage.
- So much variety, so close together. Beaches, cliffs, vineyards and small villages are all within easy reach. You can say "I do" by the sea and celebrate in the hills in the evening – or the other way round.
- Easy to reach. Paphos airport has direct flights from many European cities, which usually makes travel straightforward for your guests.
- History you can feel. The ancient sites of Paphos are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A place where people have celebrated for thousands of years – and where your own story begins a new chapter.
Places around Paphos I especially love
- Coral Bay and the coast near Peyia. Pale sand, sheltered coves and cliffs overlooking the sea – perfect for couples who love the beach but don't want to compromise on elegance.
- The Sea Caves near Peyia. Rock formations right at the water's edge, at their most striking in the late afternoon when the light turns warm.
- The Akamas Peninsula. Unspoilt nature in a protected reserve, turquoise water and plenty of peace – for couples who want something natural and private.
- Aphrodite's Rock. Legend has it that the goddess of love rose from the sea here, between Paphos and Limassol. A beautiful spot for photos on your wedding day.
Three venues I wholeheartedly recommend
Each of these venues has its own character – depending on whether you're drawn to nature, want to be right by the sea or prefer something a little more refined.
PHOS – overlooking the Akamas
PHOS is part of the Cap St Georges resort and sits above the small harbour of Agios Georgios near Peyia, on the edge of the Akamas nature reserve. Stone, wood, wide windows and a view that simply leaves you speechless. For private celebrations, "PHOS Privé" offers a more intimate setting of its own.
Coral Residences – right on the beach
The elegant Coral Residences in Kissonerga, just a few minutes from Coral Bay, have direct access to the sea. Your ceremony can take place barefoot on the beach or slightly raised in the "Upper Area", followed by your celebration in the Sea Front Clubhouse overlooking the water. Incidentally, Coral Residences is the sister property of Cap St Georges – home to PHOS.
L'Chateau – for a more refined setting
L'Chateau is a private country house in the hills of Tala above Paphos, with romantic courtyards, olive gardens and sweeping views over the sea and mountains. The ceremony takes place on the lawn, framed by cypresses, olive trees and old stone arches – stylish and entirely private.
What to keep in mind for a wedding in Paphos
- The right time of day. In summer, midday gets very hot. Plan your ceremony for the late afternoon – the light is softer and your guests can enjoy the moment instead of hunting for shade. More on this in my guide Wedding in Cyprus – what nobody really tells you.
- Wind on the coast. There's often a breeze on the west coast. Wonderful in the heat – but worth bearing in mind for décor, veils and sound.
- Spring and autumn. April to June and September to October are especially pleasant: warm, but not oppressive.
- Book your venue early. Popular coastal venues fill up quickly in high season.
